In this paper 'The sequencing of verbal complement structures', Petrovitz claims that conventional teaching of gerunds and infinitives is badly organized and ineffective, and that this is due to a failure to take into account important facts about the grammar of these items; he outlines an alternative approach, which he feels would be more successful. This paper argues that Petrovitz is mistaken on all three counts: his description of normal teaching practice does not reflect classroom reality; his account of the grammar of gerunds and infinitives is inaccurate; and his recommended approach to syllabus design and teaching is unrealistic and counterproductive.
