    The question «What are human rights?» ought to be answered not only by defining their entity and their normative relevance, but also by explaining how they have become what they are for us. Human rights are the result of causalities, historical conjunctures and an emerging configuration of cosmological, anthropological and social imaginaries in which they find or lose their meaning. In this regard, the history of human rights is not a subsidiary element for its analysis. History establishes human rights as objects for atheoretical analysis. Human rights do not exist without their history, and the story that we tell about their origin and evolution circumscribes their horizon of meaning. In the pres-ent article, I analyze three historiographical models whose perspectives give rise to three competing visions about the past, the present and the future of human rights.

    A la pregunta «¿Qué son los derechos humanos?» debemos responder no solo definiendo su entidad y su relevancia normativa, sino también explicando cómo han llegado a ser lo que son para nosotros. Los derechos humanos son el resultado de causalidades, coyunturas históricas y una configuración emergente de imaginarios cosmológicos, antropológicos y sociales en los que encuentran o pierden su sentido. En este sentido, la historia de los derechos humanos no es un elemento subsidiario para su análisis. La historia constituye a los derechos humanos como objetos para un análisis teórico. Los derechos humanos no existen sin su historia, y la historia que contamos sobre su origen y evolución circunscribe su horizonte de significación. En el presente artículo analizo tres modelos historiográficos de cuyas perspectivas surgen tres visiones en pugna acerca del pasado, el presente y el futuro de los derechos humanos.
