Resumen de Evolución geomorfológica de la Caldera de Pino Santo (Gran Canaria, Islas Canarias)

G. Rodríguez Batista, Francisco José Pérez Torrado, A. Rodríguez Santana, A. Rodríguez González

  • The Pino Santo Caldera is located in NE side of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands). The age of the caldera is less than 780 ky, deduced from the normal magnetic polarity of its lava flows. Its volcanic activity in this area began with phreatomagmatic explosive events and culminated in strombolian-type eruptions. Precise volumetric calculations of missing sustratum point to vertical collapse events affecting the previous tuff ring volcanic edifice as final cause of the geomorphological caldera generation. On the other hand, these collapse events led to the isolation of the original head of Las Morenas barranco, giving rise to the excavation of a new head in the eastern margin of the formed caldera.
