Resumen de Foraminíferos bentónicos como indicadores de un evento hipertermal en el tránsito Ypresiense-Luteciense del corte de Fortuna (Murcia, Cordillera Bética)

S. Ortiz, Eustoquio Molina Martínez

  • Benthic foraminifera ofYpresian-Lutetian transition from the Fortuna section (Betic Cordillera, Spain) have been studied in order to select a suitable section to define the Ypresian/Lutetian boundary. This section is candidate for the definition of a Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Lutetian Stage. We have recognized several intervals based on relative abundance of Globobulimina spp., indicating fluctuations in primary productivity and oxigenation. One of this intervals placed around the Ypresian/Lutetian boundary is characterized by the presence of a Globobulimina spp. peak, an Aragonia aragonensis peak and a coeval low species richness. Aragonia aragonensis is an opportunistic species whose relative abundance shows strong fluctuations between the Late Paleocene through Early Eocene when several hyperthermal events are supposed to occur. Aragonia aragonensis peaks could indicate presence of a chemosynthetic bacterial food supply triggered by the extreme temperatures occured during these events. Thus, our data support a hyperthermal event at the Ypresian/Lutetian boundary.
