  • Resumen
    • A palynological study, using pollen grains, spores and dinoflagellate cysts, Is being carried out In sections from the middle Miocene age along the European alpine are. The preliminary data of the pollen spectra show that the vegetation was guite homogeneous all over the central European area (from Switzerland to Hungary). A subtropical forest can be characterized by high percentages of 1) Taxodiaeeae (Taxodium type), 2) deciduous Quercus and Juglandaceae (Engelhardia and Carya mainly) and 3) presence with variable abundance of Cathaya and middle-high altitude elements (Tsuga, Cedrus, Abies and Picea). Conseguently can be inferred: 1) a swampy environment is frequent on the edge of the middle Miocene basins, 2) an evergreen and deciduous mixed forest in the low mountains; and 3) a middle-high altitude vegetation in some of the sections.
