Resumen de Estructura cortical y litosférica en la transición Atlántico-Mediterráneo: observables geofísicos

J. Fullea, M. Fernandez, Leire Iribarren González, Jaume Vergés i Masip

  • The current boundary between the Eurasian and African plates in the transition Atlantic Ocean to Mediterranean Sea, becomes unclear. Two available geophysical observables, the Bouguer anomaly and the geoid height, are used in order to constrain the lithospheric and crustal structure in the study area. The Bouguer anomaly is mainly related to the Moho depth and intra crustal density heterogeneities. The geoid height gives us indication of a wider range density variations in depth. Two main zones of anomalous lithospheric thickness can be distinguished in the area: a thickened lithosphere of 140 km in the Betic-Rif belt and the Gulf of Cadix, and a thinned lithosphere of 50 km towards the eastern Alboran Basin. The main Bouguer anomaly and geoid height features are correlated with the crustal and lithosphere geometry, showing the structural complexity of the region. Further 3D models are needed to better understand the lithosphere structure beneath the area of study.
