  Santa María la Antigua del Darién fue la primera ciudad fundada por los españoles en la América continental (1510). Sin embargo fue muy pronto abandonada (1524), desapareciendo por completo bajo el bosque tropical y cayendo en el olvido. Desde 2013, un proyecto promovido por el Ministerio de Cultura de Colombia y el Instituto Colombiano de Antropología e Historia excava la zona tratando de delimitar el sitio colonial de los asentamientos prehispánicos, así como de localizar el puerto de la ciudad. Este artículo se centra en este último aspecto y los trabajos hechos en torno a Bahía La Gloria, lugar donde hasta ahora se pensaba que había estado ubicado.

  Santa Maria la Antigua del Darien was the first city founded by the Spaniards in continental America (1510). However, it was soon abandoned (1524), disappearing completely under the tropical rainforest and falling into oblivion. Since 2013, a project, funded by the Ministry of Culture of Colombia and the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History, has surveyed the area trying to define the colonial site and the pre-Hispanic settlements around it as well as locate the old port city. This article focuses on the latter aspect and the work done around Gloria Bay, where until now, it was thought that the old Spanish port had been located.
