he continental Guadix-Baza Basin has been the subject of numerous studies over the last decades because of having one of the best sedimentary and palaeontological continental records in Europe. The age of capture of this basin, during the Quaternary, has been used in several studies as a reference to calculate erosion and tectonic rates, among others. There are, however, significant differences between the ages assigned by different authors. Based on the analysis of the data used in these previous dating and on a new radiometric dating performed in exorheic deposits, we propose the capture occurred at least half a million years ago. We also suggest that, once the basin was captured, a sedimentation period may be extended in some sectors of the basin in continuity with the sedimentation during the endorheic stage.
