The Truchillas glacial lake, declared Natural Monument by Junta of Castile and León in 1990, represents a unique natural reserved formed during the Last Global Glacial Maximum. Although the origin of the lake is linked to the glacial ice field that covered the La Cabrera Mountains, little is known about the role of different processes involved in the development of the lake basin, such as the geomorphological and structural control. Therefore, in order to gain insight into the origin and evolution of the lake, a combined approach based on bathymetric and topographic data from echo sounding and airborne LiDAR technology has been implemented. The proposed methodology provides a cost-effective, rapid and robust method for the production of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) in remote or difficult to access areas in mountain regions, necessary for an appropriate interpretation of the genesis and morphology of the lake.
