This paper attempts to explore machine design systems by means of functional shape matching. From a functional point of view, machine design system is much like a structure comprising a series of components which are presented by functional descriptions. The notion of structuralism implies that functional shape matching is to machine design what grammar is to language; thus, functional descriptions give synthesized shapes new meanings. Through functional shape synthesis, many diverse machine design patterns can be generated, which may constitute a breakthrough in conventional machine design.
