  • Deeply rooted both in aquatic geography of Belgium and in the author’s imaginary world, the penultimate play by Paul Willems, titled Elle disait dormir pour mourir (1983), is perfectly settled in the current of Nordic mythology linked to the presence of water. The playwright presents an extensive system of references, where water constitutes an array of different elements which create coherent isotopic relationships. The role attributed by Willems to the element of water reaches far beyond the diegesis of the microcosmic universe of the drama. The reference to the literary hydrography is completed at the intertextual level because, similarly to the poetics of Gaston Bachelard, the Belgian playwright makes use of the mythic motives inextricably connected to the hermeneutics of the element of water.
