Resumen de La perspectiva de la longevidad: un tema para re-pensar y actuar

Las generaciones actuales somos testigos de una época histórica, sin precedentes, en la que se advierte la configuración de nuevas sociedades, fruto del pluralismo étnico, cultural, religioso, de la diversidad de identidades nacionales y de la construcción de nuevas identidades etarias.
Estudiosos e investigadores sociales hoy están atentos e interesados por la longevidad, tanto en cuanto hecho personal como en su perspectiva socio-cultural. Los significativos cambios en el ciclo vital y su alargamiento muestran importantes efectos, no sólo sobre el estado y el número de personas mayores sino también sobre todas las instituciones sociales. Asimismo, hacen prever la continuidad y la diversidad de situaciones emergentes hacia el futuro.
A medida que los sujetos y las poblaciones envejecen, las sociedades se ven afectadas por las características y ritmos del envejecer, ya que cada cultura, cada época, cada tiempo histórico, manifiestan sus propios patrones de envejecimiento y configuran modelos de envejecer y de vejez.
Ante ello, la investigación y la práctica gerontológicas, en sus múltiples dimensiones, intentan pensar y diseñar nuevas estrategias, más equitativas, solidarias y menos costosas, a las que puedan acceder un mayor número de envejecentes. Asimismo, el esfuerzo está dirigido a desarrollar el potencial del colectivo de mayores, para mantenerlos como agentes activos de nuestra sociedad, lo cual supone trabajar en distintos campos, de manera cooperativa, para lograr su resignificada identidad, su inclusión social y una saludable y creativa convivencia intergeneracional.

Current generations are witness to an historical, unprecedented time, with the creation of new societies that are the result of ethnic, cultural and religious pluralism, the diversity of national identities, and the building of new age identities. Today, scholars and social scientists are interested in longevity, both as a personal fact and in terms of its sociocultural perspective.
Significant changes across the lifespan and its extension reveal important effects, not only on the state and number of elderly people, but also on every social institution. Accordingly, these changes announce the continuity and diversity of new situations in the future.
While individuals and populations age, societies are affected by the characteristics and pace of aging. Every culture, every time, and every historical age have their own aging patterns and create models of aging and old age. Thus, gerontological research and practice in their multiple dimensions attempt to think and design new, more equitable, supportive, and less expensive strategies that should be accessible to a larger number of aging people. Also, the efforts are aimed at developing the potential of the elderly so that they may remain active social agents.
This implies working cooperatively in different areas towards a resignified identity for the elderly, their social inclusion, and a healthy and creative intergenerational coexistence.
