When a product is to be manufactured in large quantities, automation and high-volume manufacturing processes are often considered as an attractive means to reduce costs and improve quality and productivity. While this is usually the case, it must be noted that product redesign, as a cost-cutting tool, can generate even greater benefits. In many cases, redesigned products are often optimized to the point where cost reduction can approach 90%. In addition, the costs of material for the various component parts and their manufacture and assembly are also greatly reduced. Not only are costs reduced, the quality, reliability and performance of the product are usually enhanced. This paper discusses how product redesign can be deployed as a cost-cutting tool to reduce the manufacturing cost and to enhance quality and performance. The cost-cutting tool is used in a case study to optimize the stamping process.
