Resumen
Designing can be seen as the activities necessary to determine the properties of a product. The problem of lack of established property information to support decisions can be solved by effective laying out and detailing of alternative solutions. The laying out/embodiment phase of the design process is a forgotten area, very much based on pure intuition, which calls for a deeper understanding and a more systematic approach. By means of identifying the decisive properties for each component in a machine system and focusing design activities on them, a more effective laying out phase can be achieved. Evaluation of solutions can thereby be based on the established properties, information that is necessary to make correct and good decisions. Relations between components and relations between properties within each component have to be considered together during laying out. The main elements of a suitable laying out procedure are finally presented.
