During the 15 years that Palliative Medicine has been developing in Spain, several universities have clearly shown their concern about problems related to care at the end of life. Doctoral dissertations are one of the ways in which they have manifested their interest in this field. The main goal of this study is to identify the doctoral dissertations on Palliat ive Medicine or issues related to Palliative Care defended in Spain between 1985 and 2000.

The database TESEO from the Ministry of Education was used to carry out the search for the dissertations. In addition, personal contacts were used to collect information. By June 2000, 50 doctoral dissertations from 22 different universities were identified. These works are presented in tables that include information about the title, author, year and university as well as group of origin. In fact, the first dissertations written by professionals directly involved in Palliative Care date back to 1992. The study shows that 12 dissertations have been written in the field of Palliative Care, 5 in Psychology, 4 in Pain, and 3 in Oncology. Finally, in these studies, the psychoemotional side appears to be the most studied aspect.

Access to scientific information and knowledge of other doctoral work are an important stimulus for future research. This study is the first compilation of references of dissertation written within Spanish Universities about terminal patients and their problems, and therefore an important resource for professionals in this field. The database that has been elaborated can be accessed from a Palliative Care web page (www.secpal.com) and will be periodically updated.
