The present article is a synthesis of doctoral research on motivation in the process of voting. It examines the reasons why a person decides to take action when he/she cannot carry it out. The study took place in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico during the period 2008- 2013 as part of my doctoral thesis in social sciences at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Monterrey Campus. The aims of this research, therefore, were to identify the motivations of an individual and of a social nature that lead to voting, to describe how they are manifested in the voter, and to determine what type of motivations have a major influence in the voters in Monterrey. The results of this research work show that, in Monterrey, in spite of the fact that there are both social and individual motivations to vote, what predominates are those having their origin in the dynamics of a social nature, concretely the phenomenon of social integration. This sociological dimension of the vote comes from adhering to a culture in which respect for social norms and shared values guide people’s behavior, including voting.
