    Este artículo se propone analizar el papel del Océano Atlántico en la geografía y cartografía del Occidente medieval, tomando como referencia el ejemplar del Theatrum Orbis Terrarum conservado en el Fondo Antiguo de la Universidad de La Laguna. Nos proponemos, por un lado, estudiar cómo la tradición antigua y medieval llega al siglo XVI en lo que respecta a la relación del hombre con los límites occidentales del mundo conocido, y por otro, valorar el innegable interés de los documentos que alberga el Fondo Antiguo de la Universidad de La Laguna y su gran potencial para la investigación.

    This paper analyses the role of the Atlantic Ocean in western medieval Geography and Cartography, taking the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum held in the University of La Laguna’s old repository as example. On one hand, we will show how the traditional way of seeing the western limits of the known world reaches the 16th century, and on the other hand, we will value the undeniable interest of the documents held by the University of La Laguna’s old repository, as well as its great research potential.
