A mixed integer linear programming model for supply chain network optimization is developed in this research designed to control its greenhouse gas emissions. Controlling and reducing them it is possible to mitigate climate change. The model is therefore oriented to aid supply chain management to achieve economic and environmental sustainability. It also aids in teaching engineering students, comprehension of the problem, stressing the impact of the configuration of the supply chain on its carbon footprint. The model can optimize the supply chain network in various ways focusing on limiting the carbon emissions of the entire supply chain. The proposed model was applied to the supply chain network of a product in a case study demonstrating its practical usefulness and to show how network decisions affect both costs and environment. Among the most relevant results, it is worth to mention that it is possible to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of a supply chain network allowing a reasonable increase in cost.
