This study was done in a children's hospital, aims to 1) increase the effective utilization of operating rooms, and 2) reduce the percentage of delayed surgeries. The Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) methodology was applied within a Lean Six-Sigma approach. During the define phase, information and data was collected to define the problem. Then, in the steps of measuring and analyzing, a time study was performed to identify and measure causes of delay at the operating room. Besides, root causes analysis was carried out for validating the causes with the staff. Solutions were proposed for different causes of major influence. Additionally, a simulation model was developed to demonstrate the positive effects of the proposed improvements. The model showed that the proposed improvements could increase the effective utilization of the operating rooms.
