En sus ansias de riqueza, España estableció un sistema económico monopolista en el Nuevo Mundo que dependía en gran medida de sus flotas. Las naves llevaban artículos para desembarcar en los puertos del Caribe y volvían cargadas de plata y materiales preciosos de diferentes lugares. A partir de 1561, con pocas excepciones anuales, dos flotas, La Nueva España y La Tierra Firme, zarparían de los puertos de la península ibérica, navegaría por la costa africana hasta llegar a las islas Canarias y a continuación emprenderían rumbo oeste aprovechando los vientos favorables. Las rutas marítimas a las Indias occidentales estaban permanentemente amenazadas por las inclemencias del tiempo y asaltos piráticos en alta mar. Sobre todo la travesía de regreso, donde se añadía los cayos de Florida. In its rush for wealth and richer, Spain established an monopolistic economic system in the New Word that depended mainly on its fleets. Their ships carried goods that would be affloaded in the ports of the Caribbean and returned to Spain laden with silver and other precious goods from differents ports of the extensive Spanish Empire in America. As from 1561, with few exceptions, every year two fleets, the “Nuena España” and yhe “Tierra Firme” would sail from Spanish mainland portsdown the cost of West Africa to the Canary Islands, they would then using the Trade Winds to read West across the Atlantic. The maritime router to the West Indies were permanently menaced by storns and by pirate attacks, especially on the journey home back to Spain of course also by the reefs off Florida. Often on the journey home in wartime, declared or undeclared, foreign powers contract merchant ship to commit hstile acts, that in some cases could be classified as piracy.
