La Unión Europa aspira a dotarse de las capacidades militares autónomas que sean necesarias para garantizar la defensa de Europa y de sus ciudadanos. En esta progresiva construcción de la autonomía estratégica, el contexto geopolítico actual y la crisis existencial de la UE han favorecido, paradójicamente, iniciativas bilaterales del eje franco-alemán de carácter militar, impensables en otra época. Si bien la idea de un euro-ejército dista mucho de ser una necesidad real, al menos, a corto plazo, existen, otras vías en la UE que permitirán a los europeos asumir una mayor responsabilidad en su defensa, pero sin menoscabar la cooperación con la OTAN.

The European Union aims to achieve autonomous military capabilities that are necessary to guarantee the defense of Europe and its citizens. In this progressive construction of strategic autonomy, the current geopolitical context and the existential crisis of the EU have, paradoxically, favored bilateral initiatives of the Franco-German axis of a military nature, unthinkable at another time. While the idea of a European army is far from being a real need, at least, in the short term, there are other ways in the EU that will allow Europeans to take greater responsibility for their defense, without undermining cooperation with NATO.
