Yacimientos inéditos de carófitas que contribuyen a fijar el límite Cretácico-Terciario en el Pirineo Catalán

    Se prosigue el estudio del límite Cretácico-Terciario en las sierras sud pirenaicas de Cataluña, el cual habíamos esbozado en notas anteriores.

    Las asociaciones de Carófitas (Characeae) encontradas en la base de la "caliza de Vallcebre" (término mediano de la formación continental del Maastrichtiense-Paleoceno; "garumniense") en varias localidades entre los ríos Segre y Noguera Ribagorzana, al W de la localidad tipo, permite generalizar la edad terciaria (Dano-Montiense, probablemente) de ese término litoestratigráfico, que por ser muy extendido y fácilmente reconocible constituye una clara línea de referencia de inexcusable uso en cartografía geológica.

    No obstante, entre la base de las margas con Carófitas en cuestión y el techo de la "arenisca con reptiles" del Maastrichtiense, restan unos pocos metros de margas arenosas, con una cuña de areniscas sólo presente en las sierras más meridionales, cuya datación permanece aún imprecisa.

    We continue the study of the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary in the South-pyrenean mountain ranges of Catalonia (Spain). This boundary has been outlined in our other previous notes.

    The Carophyta (Characeae) associations found in the basal part of the "Vallcebre limestone" (the middle terminus of the continental formation of the Maastrichtian-Paleocene; "garumnian") in several localities between the rivers Segre and Noguera Ribagorzana, to the west type locality, allows us to generalise the tertiary age (Dano-Montian, probably) of that lithostratigraphic term, which due to its great extense and easy recognition is a clear line of reference of necessary use in geological cartography.

    However, between the basal part of de marls with Carophytes in question and the top of the "sandstone with reptiles" of Maastrichtian age, there are a few metres of sandstone marls, which include a wedge of sandstones which is only present in the more meridional mountain ranges, whose age is still indetermined.
