La bioética de Potter: la búsqueda de la sabiduría en el origen de la bioética y de la ética ambiental

    La bioética y la ética ambientales están unidas por raíces profun- das. En el presente escrito se intentará demostrar la validez de tal afirmación, tomando como punto de partida la obra del padre de la bioética, Van Rensselaer Potter, y el padre de la ética am- biental, Arne Næss. Las dos disciplinas, además, comparten la misma historia, ya que se configuran como la respuesta filosófica más interesante a los problemas originados con los recientes de- sarrollos tecnológicos. La necesidad de una ciencia de la supervi- vencia (Potter), que sepa finalmente dirigir las nuevas acciones humanas y el conocimiento que las acompaña, debe estar, según la perspectiva de Potter (y también de Næss), siempre acompa- ñada por el desarrollo de la virtud de la sabiduría y de la prudencia.

    Bioethics and environmental ethics share deep common roots. In this paper we will attempt to demonstrate this statement, inspired by both the work of the father of bioethics, Van Rensselaer Potter, and the father of environmental ethics, Arne Næss. The two disci- plines even share a common history, since they constitute the most interesting philosophical answer to the problems originated by the recent technological developments. The need for a science of survival (Potter), which can finally guide the new human actions and the knowledge that goes along with them, must be, from Potter’s (and also Næss’) perspective, always accompanied by the development of the virtues of wisdom and prudence.
