The Oviedo Convention of 1997 has established fundamental and uniform rules in reference to free and informed consent. Even though twenty years have passed, few States have signed and ra- tified the Convention. Today, however, the Charter of Fundamen- tal Rights of 2000 and the Treaty of Lisbon of 2007, deeply refor- ming the European Union, can finally give the hoped implementa- tion to the Convention of Oviedo, at least indirectly.
This contribution deals with the articulated historical and juridi- cal context of the sources related to the Convention.
