Los amantes sin ochavo: ¿el primer sainete portugués?

    Manuel de Figueiredo (1725-1801), miembro de la Arcádia Lusitana y diplomático en Madrid entre 1746 y 1753, es autor del sainete Los amantes sin ochavo que aparece al final del O avaro dissipador, una farsa que contrapone el carácter y el teatro español y portugués. Esta pieza en un acto, escrita en castellano, nos lleva a creer que Figueiredo conocía en profundidad las tendencias teatrales en boga en España, y más en concreto la creciente popularidad del término sainete en perjuicio de entremés. En el presente artículo, pretendemos (1) discutir la relación entre el sainete y la obra mayor que lo antecede, a la luz de la tradición sainetera española, teniendo en cuenta que, en Portugal, hasta el siglo XX, el término no asume la acepción de “género teatral breve”, y, además, (2) confrontaremos el sainete de Figueiredo con la producción española del mismo género en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII.

    Manuel de Figueiredo, a member of the 18th-century Portuguese literary society Arcádia Lusitana and a diplomat in Madrid between 1746 and 1753, wrote the sainete Los amantes sin ochavo and inserted it at the end of O avaro dissipador, a farce that confronts the Spanish and the Portuguese theatre and national character. This one-piece composition is written in Spanish and shows Figueiredo’s wide knowledge about the Spanish theatrical tendencies and the increasing popularity of the term sainete. In this article we will (1) discuss the relationship between Los amantes sin ochavo and O avaro dissipador in the light of the Spanish sainete tradition, taking into account that until the 20th-century the term sainete does not assume the meaning of «brief theatrical genre», and in addition (2) compare Figueredo´s sainete with the Spanish production during the second half of the 18thcentury.
