This article has two parts: the first explores the presence of the Song of Songs in the life of St. John of the Cross, and the second proposes a sanjuanist biblical hermeneutic, based primarily on The Song. This biblical poem accompanied the Castilian saint throughout his life and work; however he does not repeat, but rather permanently recreates and re-enunciates, the biblical wedding poem, identifying himself completely with the Wife and eventually becoming and speaking like her. His work is, therefore, reiterative, unfinished and inspired by the strong theological sense applied to Scripture.
