"Un regalo para el príncipe de la paz". Godoy, el cabildo de la catedral de Sevilla y el relicario del "lignum crucis" de clemente XIV

    Carlos IV y María Luisa de Parma visitaron Sevilla en 1796 junto a la familia real y la corte. La regia jornada fue inspirada por Godoy, ya en la cúspide del poder, y originó todo tipo de intrigas políticas y rivalidades institucionales. Resulta expresivo que el único regalo que el cabildo de la catedral hispalense hiciese no fuese a los reyes, sino a Godoy. Se trató del lignum crucis de Clemente XIV, para el cual confeccionó un fabuloso relicario de oro el orfebre Antonio Méndez, con singular implicación de la institución.

    Carlos IV and Maria Luisa of Parma visited Seville in 1796 with the royal family and the court. The royal trip was inspired by Godoy, already in the height of power, originated all kinds of political intrigues and institutional rivalries. It was expressive that the only present that the Sevillian cathedral chapter was doing did not go to the kings, but to Godoy. It was the Clement XIV lignum crucis, for which there made a fabulous reliquary of gold the goldsmith Antonio Méndez, with a singular implication of the institution.
