In the middle of the present-day investigations on the fundamental theological statutes, the article illuminates the twofold significance of this theology: that of establishing the basis of al1 the theology; and that of indicating the theological discipline that has been formed in the recent decades, and is still being formed, in critical opposi- tion and in continuity with the apologetics The first meaning, which supposes that theology is a realization of the faith and an intellectus fidei, comes from the critical analysis of the problematic distinction between .ad extra.and cad intram of the theological discussion and examination of the ccword of Godm concept. As a specific theological discipline, fundamental theology is presented as the control area of the ccintellectus fidein, of the fundamental theological categories supposed in al1 theology, in the context of the word of God and the language of faith. All this does not exclude that fundamental theology is moving towards the following objects: that of looking for rational human credibility in faith, when the faith is only credible because of present personal reasons; that of showing the adaptability of the Revelation with man, and at the same time indicating how distant they are from each other. And, finally, that of looking for a presentation of the contents of the Revelation with the help of historical and philosophical argument; and, at the same time, to note that Deus semper maiorn cannot be made onjective by our knowledge.
