There are clearly two literary layer in the writing of the prologue of Prov. 1,1-7. The first, given by verses 2-6, with its six words preceded by the preposition L, display alternately: 2 = v. 2 + 1 = v. 3a; 2 = v. 4 + 1 = v. 6a, setting a uniforrn rnetrical rhythrn. Verses 3b and 6b form a cornplernent to this primitive layer, whereas verse 5, with a different metrical structure (4 + 3), provide an interpolation or a later gloss. The second literary layer appears with the inclusion of verse 7 that brings the conclusion to a clearly concentric literary structure: A-A': 2a = 7; B-B': 2b = 6b; C: 4b. This structure shows the centre significantly: the concept of DA'AT (v. 4b) that converts into a key expression facing the finality of the Book of Proverbs. This DA'AT which in the first layer appears not to refer to Jahweh, in the second layer (thanks to the inclusion of verse 7) has a clear reference to Jahweh by relating him to YIR'AT YHWH (fear or religious feeling). Thus, sapiential knowledge, despite being apparently a lay mode, finds the root, principle and best part in the rnost profound knowledge of that which has Jahweh as its reference and horizon.
