In this article, we evaluated the awareness and use of contraceptive methods and abortion in a sample of 528 female inmates invarious Spanish penal institutions. We found that the vast majority of inmates had adequate knowledge of these methods, and that approximately 90% had used them at some time. We also evaluated the relationship between their use and various social and demographic parameters, as well as the reasons for using a certain contraceptive method. We found that approximately 75% of inmates used these methods on the prescription of a physician. Only 21% of women had experienced a negative side effect after using contraceptives, generally moderate. As regards the perception of the safety of the method used, almost 79% said that it was safe In relation to the morning after pill, 75% of women were awareof it, considering that it should only be used after casual sex and not as a routine contraceptive method. In relation to abortion, 60% said that they had never had an abortion. Those who had done so preferred surgical abortion; only7.2% had used the abortion pill. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a comprehensive assessment of the knowledge and use of contraceptive methods and abortion in Spanish penal institutions has beenperformed.
