  • Resumen
    • It is possible nowadays to have a very alive picture of the audiences of the Patristic Epoch, thanks to the personal testirnony and abundant literary legacy of the preachers of the Ancient Church, and contemporary stenographers. The details offered by historic sources have more than anecdotic interest. The disposition and nature of people during sermons, limited to a certain point the preaching of the Fathers of the Church. Great preachers such as John Chrysostom, S. Agustin and some others, experienced an affectionate mutual understanding between orator and audience in spite of firm attitudes that pastors sornetimes had to adopt in their sermons, provoking reactions of pain amongst their hearers. At other times the happy and even enthusiastic approval of the people was aroused. A consideration of the christian audiences of the early centuries of the Church can lead to an understanding of the people of particular epochs and civilizations. Above al1 they show the nature of man throughout times.
