Chemical zoning of apatite is exceptionally common, especially within apatite of igneous provenance, and frequently involves variation in U and Th contents. The presence of such zoning, which may be readily identified and imaged using techniques such as cathodoluminescence, may have significant effects on apatite thermochronology by U-Th/He and fission track methods.
