Etching and annealing properties offission tracks in zircon are reviewed. Consideration o f the annealing experiments that use induced and spontaneous tracks suggests that we need to undertake more fundamental studies o f zircon composition, structure and experimental bias. Results from radioactive waste disposal studies that have looked into the relationships between zircon structure and accumulated radiation damage provide some useful indicators o f underlying controls on zircon fission track annealing.
