Resumen de Mt 21, 5: Une lecture Midrashique de Za 9,9

Madeleine Taradach

  • How does Matthew (21,5) use a prophetic text (Ze. 9,9)? The paper starts with a review of the formulae by which Mat- thew introduces quotations in relationship with the classical rabbinic formulae. Attention is paid to the fact that Matthew and his community were well aware of the ancient messianic traditions, so as of the reading of a pericope from the Prophets at the synagogue to conclude the service (haftarahland to illuminate the Torah reading. In this particular verse, Matthew apparently reads Zecariah both from the W and the Hebrew text, keeping even a hebraic poetical form. For Matthew, Zecariah's prophecy is fully accomplished in Jesus: the entrance of a humble, peaceful Messiah riding a don- key, etc ... The study of traditions presupposed by Ze. 9,9 is of a great help to understand the midrashic exegesis of Matthew. Reading this prophecy on the light of Jesus' life and sayings, Matthew squares the old with the new.
