Optimization programs for the use of antibiotics (PROA) have become a keystone to promote the appropriate use of these therapeutic resources in Hospitals. This work describes the process of implementation, activity and acceptance of a multi-disciplinary team, formed in the Hospital in order to develop a program of this characteristics after the first six months of activity. Method: A quasi-experimental prospective intervention study conducted in a second level Hospital during the period May-October 2018. In April 2018, the managers of the Center approved to develop the PROA Group and empowered it as an advisory/consultancy organ on any antimicrobial use that takes place in the Hospital. The performed interventions are of individualized, non-restrictive or imposed, advisory nature and executed through specific alerts in the Electronic Medical Record or after a direct visit with the physician in charge of the patient. Results: The infectious condition of 304 patients was analyzed; the antibiotic treatment was considered optimizable in 37.2% (113/304). The main causes and rates of such optimizable prescription were: Narrow therapeutic-spectrum (12.6%), broad-spectrum (10.3%), need for antibiotics without prescription (4.3%) and in-appropriate dose (3.3%). The 89.1% of recommendations were fully accepted, partially 2.3% and 4.3% rejected. Conclusions: The multidisciplinary team's activity after six months of work is satisfactory. There is a high percentage of accepted interventions. The team has become a key platform for the antibiotic management in Hospital. © 2019 Rasgo Editorial S.A.. All rights reserved.
