Resumen de Parenteral and enteral nutrition in patients with intestinal failure: A review

Cristóbal Gallego Muñoz, Francisco Javier Ferreira Alfaya, Luis Sanchis Osuna

  • Introduction: Acute intestinal failure is a reversible clinical condition characterized by reduced intestinal function, which requires the intravenous supplementation of nutrients. In this update, we review and summarize the main evidence about the medical treatment with enteral and parenteral nutrition in these patients. Method: An exhaustive search of the published studies in referential data sources was performed, up to February 10, 2019. Results: We included the evidence of principal scientific societies and observational studies, clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Conclusions: These patients typically require parenteral nutrition as the main nutritional support method. In some cases, however, enteral nutrition can supplement parenteral nutrition for patients who maintain a certain degree of gastrointestinal functionality. © 2019 Rasgo Editorial S.A..
