On occasion of the 30th anniversary of Pope John's opening Speech to Vatican II, Gaudet Mater Ecclesia (October 1 lth, 1962), the A. underlines the pastoralcharacter Pope John XXlll attributed to the ecclesiastical magisterium. Through some representative samples, the A. shows how, afler the Council, during the Pontifi- cate of Paul VI and John Paul II, by themselves or through the Roman Congregations, the doctrinaldimension of magisterium has taken the overhand. The tension between a doctrinal and a pastoral orientation was felt, from the first times afler the Council, both in Rome and among the Bishops, as individuals and as united in national conferences.
