The archaeological site of Horta de João Lopes (Selmes, Vidigueira), located in the Guadiana basin, was subjected to archaeological excavations in connection with the mitigation strategy of the threatened archaeological heritage due to the construction of the Hydraulic Circuit of Pedrógão, related with the Alqueva Dam. The field work comprised 15 archaeological surveys having several prehistoric negative structures been recorded, namely prehistoric pits/silos and “bone” plan structures, in addition to other structures already ascribed to historical periods.

A finger ring was found in situ on an adult buried in a foetal position in Pit 9. Micro-EDXRF analysis of the artefact has identified lead as the major constituent. The radiocarbon dating of the skeleton allowed assigning a chronology in the transition from the 1st to the 2nd quarter of the second millennium BC. Therefore, this finger ring is the oldest lead artefact ever recorded in the Iberian Peninsula, with a chronology much earlier than the first production of this metal in the region, considering that this has occurred with the introduction of the silver cupellation during the Orientalizing period. Following these results several inferences will be discussed regarding the trade of goods over long distances and the social status of individuals buried in pits during the Southwestern Bronze Age.
