Este libro trata sobre la arquitectura de la modernidad y su relación con la máquina a partir, no tanto de casos concretos, sino de algunas de las ideas predominantes en los discursos de base de las arquitecturas modernas más importantes comprendidas entre mediados del siglo XVIII y finales del XX. De hecho, un lector interesado en análisis detallados de edificios no encontrará aquí lo que busca, aunque debería leer este libro para comprender el alcance de la ideología maquinista en el desarrollo de la modernidad arquitectónica y sus corolarios contemporáneos. Uno de los objetivos del libro es, precisamente, subrayar la enorme relevancia de estos discursos sobre la máquina para no dejarse encandilar por las metáforas que han lastrado, hasta hace relativamente poco tiempo, las lecturas canónicas de la arquitectura moderna. Dichas metáforas fueron sistemáticamente propagadas por los propios arquitectos, por los historiadores más influyentes, y por algunos de los teóricos vinculados con lo que se ha venido a llamar el proyecto moderno. Estas operaciones de abuso de la metáfora siguen siendo completamente actuales, y este libro es una buena herramienta para armarse críticamente frente a los excesos de la retórica de cara a adquirir capacidad de juicio y agencia propias.

This book investigates the architecture of modernity and its relationship to the machine. It does so not through specific case studies, but through the research of some of the prevailing ideas in the discourse of the most important modern architectures between the mid-eighteenth century and the end of the twentieth. In fact, a reader interested in fully detailed analyzes of buildings will not find them here, although this kind of reader should go through this book to understand the role of machine-ideology in the development of modern architecture and the contemporary corollaries. One of the goals of the book is precisely to stress the enormous importance of this discourse on the machine in order to avoid being dazzled by the metaphors that have burdened, until relatively recently, the canonical readings of modern architecture. Such metaphors were systematically propagated by the architects themselves, by the most influential historians, and by some theoreticians linked to what has been called the modern project. The abuse of the metaphor in the architectural discourse remains completely current, and this book is a good tool to take a critical stance, judgement and agency against the excesses of rhetorics.
