Resumen de Mud-mound typology in carbonate platforms of the Lower Cretaceous (Basque-Cantabrian Region, N Iberia)

Pedro Angel Fernández Mendiola

  • Different typologies of carbonate mud-mounds from the Lower Cretaceous of the central BasqueCantabrian Basin (Duranguesado, Corbea, Aitzgorri) are proposed. Eighteen mounds were investigated ranging in size from metric to hectometric. Compositionally they range from organismsupported fabrics (Chondrodonta) to mud-supported with scattered metazoans (sponges, corals, rudists or Bacinella) floating in the matrix. We recognize various mound paleoenvironments:

platform interior,; margin, slope or growing isolated offshore. The largest mud-mounds correspond to those growing in the margins of the platforms.
