Geochemical analyses have been very helpful in study with greater accuracy the variations in organic matter composition between the different systems tracts in the Mas d'Asda Fm. which corresponds to the Kimmeridgian-2 depositional sequence. Variations in organic matter composition and particularly in bacterial populations are though to be closely related to changes of sea level.
Thus, transgressive systems tract (TST) or highstand systems tract (HST) situations induced variations in water depths with a direct influence on both phytoplankton and bacterial assemblages. In this study the homohopanes distribution indicates strong differences between systems tracts (TST and HST). Other geochemical parameters such as: diasteranes, steranes, gammacerane index, are also used. Their distribution suggests significant changes in the organic trends of systems tracts.
