The possibilities animating musical transcriptions in multimedia analyses of music are here illustrated by research on improvisation and computers carried out by IRCAM and the Lubat Company. Multimedia animation allows the synchronisation of piano-rolls with sound and the coupling of these transcriptions with videos showing simultaneously what is produced (the music) and the way it is produced (the musician in the act of playing). In more complex systems, such as those of computer based improvisations, the visual animation allow the musician in the very act of improvisation to follow in real time the display of the indicators calculated by the machine (for example harmonic sequences) and therefore enables him to modify his playing accordingly. Is there not something paradoxical in associating the “prescriptive” character of instructions displayed on screen and in real time with the supposedly “unpredictable” character of improvisation?
