Las primeras referencias escritas acerca del arte rupestre en territorio mexicano son realmente antiguas, de momentos históricos posteriores a la conquista, hechas por viajeros, científicos y religiosos que recorrieron el territorio e hicieron de ellas una reseña narrativa y anecdótica de lo que veían representado. Durante los inicios del siglo XX, la profusión y majestuosidad de sitios monumentales mesoamericanos y la exuberancia de los materiales arqueológicos ensombrecieron y soslayaron el estudio de algunos materiales como las manifestaciones rupestres. En la actualidad se intensifican y diversifican los trabajos. El futuro de la investigación para resolver algunos de los problemas que plantea ha de pasar por la intensificación del registro de yacimientos; por atender los estudios regionales; por la integración del arte rupestre a la temporalidad y contextos culturales; por profundizar en los análisis etnográficos y continuar con la atención a la preservación y conservación del arte rupestre.

The earliest written references to rock art in Mexican territory are really ancient, made after the Spanish conquest by travelers, scientists and missionaries. They traveled all over the territory and narrated the drawings that they saw. During the beginning of the XX century, because of the wealth and magnificence of Mesoamerican monumental sites and the abundance of archaeological materials, the study of some materials, such as the cave manifestations, declined. In present day, scholars have again intensified and diversified the study of rock art. The future of this research lies in trying to solve some of the following problems: the intensification of the record of deposits, the consideration of regional studies, the integration of rock art into temporal and cultural contexts, the deepening of ethnographic analysis and the continuation of attention to the preservation and conservation of rock art.
