Resumen de "La enseñanza de idiomas debe cambiar". El pensamiento metodológico de Wilhem Viëtor y su trasfondo lingüístico

El polémico panfleto de Wilhelm Viëtor (1850-1918) Der Sprachunterricht muss umkehren ('La enseñanza de idiomas debe cambiar' 1882) se considera, en manuales de didáctica de las lenguas extranjeras, como un acta constitutiva del método directo en la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras. Se atribuye la idea del uso exclusivo de la lengua extranjera y la exclusión absoluta de la lengua materna que incluye la enseñanza inductiva de la gramática. En este artículo, analizaré primero el polémico artículo de Viëtor para contextualizarlo después en las corrientes de la lingüística de su tiempo y descubrir las influencias posibles. Asimismo, me concentraré en la influencia de August Schleicher (1821-1868) en el concepto de lengua de Viëtor. En la segunda parte de esta contribución, intentaré analizar el contexto lingüístico de Viëtor. Las ideas de Viëtor pueden explicarse principalmente por el desarrollo de la fonética y por el interés de sus representantes por la enseñanza.

Wilhelm Viëtor's polemical pamphlet (1850-1918) Der Sprachunterricht muss umkehren ('Foreign language teaching has to change' 1882) is considered by many manuals of didactics as a founding document of the direct method in foreign language teaching. The idea of the exclusive use of the foreign language and of the absolute exclusion of the native language, which includes the inductive teaching of grammar, is attributed to Viëtor. In this article, I will first analyse Viëtor's article to contextualise it later in the tendencies in linguistics of his time and to discover possible influences. Furthermore, I will focus on the influence of August Schleicher (1821-1868) on Viëtor's concept of language. In the second part of the paper I will try to analyse Viëtor's linguistic context. Viëtor's ideas can mainly be explained by the development of phonetics and the interest of its protagonists in language teaching.
