En las últimas décadas los estudios sobre la Ilustración (o sobre las Ilustraciones) y sobre el republicanismo de los siglos XVII y XVIII generalmente han minimizado, incluso omitido, el papel del cristianismo. Con independencia de sus motivos, esta tendencia ha conducido a una importante distorsión del paisaje histórico. Este artículo revisa la historiografía reciente y pone de manifiesto, por una parte, que la mayoría de los ilustrados del siglo XVIII se vieron a sí mismos como ilustrados cristianos, mientras que, por otra parte, la mayoría de los republicanos de los siglos XVII y XVIII se vieron a sí mismos igualmente como republicanos cristianos.

Over the last few decades, studies of the Enlightenment or Enlightenments and of republicanism in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries have tended to downplay or omit altogether the role of Christianity. Whatever may be the motivations for this tendency, the result is a serious distortion of the historical record. This article reviews the evidence for making the case that most eighteenth century enlighteners conceived of themselves as Christian enlighteners, and most seventeenth and eighteenth century republicans conceived of themselves as Christian republicans.
