  • Resumen
    • The term maiestas is ignored in the dictionaries of biblical theology as also in those of systematic theology. Occasional allusions to the word maiestas describe it as synonymous of gloria. Nevertheless, the Latin Bible, whether the veteres latinae or the translations made by Jerome give this word its own semantic meaning. Thus it is correct to speak about the value and the meaning of maiestas in the Vulgate where the term is used 34 times. Maiestas in the Vulgate is a term neither absorbable nor identical to gloria, claritas or splendor. lts use by the Latin Bible has been prefigured by the latinitas classica. Neither the classical Greek nor the Biblical one has a term equivalent to maiestas. So, the reader is surprised to see that Nova Vulgata tends to sub- stitute gloria. Maiestas in the Latin Bible has its own theological meaning which must be respected.
