Qoheleth represents the skeptical side of lsnaelite wisdom. He does not reject the wisdom movement, but he does challenge some of its cherised beliefs: the first of these is the classic concept of God. Qoheleth's quarrel is with any theology that ignores experiences and thereby tends to become unreal. In no way can Qoheleth be said to have a close personal relationship with God: Qoheleth sees God as a ((He)), not as a ((You)). He speaks often of God, never with God. Still, Israel's sages manage to say much about this mysterious deity whose wondrous name concealed more than it divulged. Qoheleth acknowledges God's mystery, likening it to the amazing power tliat forms an embryo within the womb of a pregnant woman, Lacking and experience wilh God, Qoheleth advocates prudence before absolute power. For a theologian economy of :;peech is better than extended talk.
