    El pas de l’antic règim a un estat liberal va suposar per a la ciutat de Figueres l’inici d’un seguit de transformacions econòmiques i polítiques que van tenir una derivada en les seves estructures de sociabilitat. A mitjan segle XIX van començar a constituir-se diferents entitats culturals i de lleure que reflectien els diversos projectes ideològics dels nous grups socials emergents. Aquests espais, que responien a uns interessos i a unes necessitats ciutadanes noves, canalitzaven i expressaven les aliances i els enfrontaments d’unes classes socials no sempre homogènies, precisament perquè s’estaven configurant i prenent consciència d’elles mateixes durant aquells anys. El 1857, el Casino Figuerense fou un dels primers a fundar-se amb uns objectius molt clars: representar uns sectors de classes mitjanes-altes amb un pensament políticament progressista i econòmicament productivista.

    In the city of Figueres, the passage from the old regime to a liberal state was accompanied by a series of economic and political transformations that also affected its structures of sociability. Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, different cultural and recreational associations were created which reflected the various ideological projects of the emerging new social groups. These spaces responded to new interests and citizen needs, and channelled and expressed the alliances and confrontations of not always homogeneous social classes, precisely because they were only emerging and becoming aware of themselves during those years. In 1857, the Casino Figuerense was one of the first ones to be founded with very clear objectives: to represent sectors of the middle to upper classes with politically progressive and economically productive ideology
