El forastero was written by Jacinto Arnal de Bolea, an obscure writer who lived in the Spanish-dominated Sardinia of 17th century. It’s a long Baroque novel, characterized by a very complex style and a diverse structure; its plot consists, at times, of episodes in the style of the novela cortesana and at other times of travel stories reminiscent of the Byzantine genre. This paper focuses on the variation between both narrative types and investigates the relationship between such variation and the moral evolution of the main characters, trapped between transgression and obedience to the social code of their century.
