Resumen: Este artículo examina los argumentos centrales del libro México and its Heritage, y ubica su escritura tanto en la historia personal del autor como en el contexto binacional en que se produce. A la luz de ello, se sostiene que la interpretación de Gruening es de corte liberal progresista o "estatista", en tanto enfatiza las dificultades de la (re)construcción de una máquina burocrática fundada en nuevos valores y procedimientos. En todo caso, parece claro que el pesimismo y las críticas al proceso revolucionario de México and its Heritage no derivan de la animosidad, sino del desencanto de la percepción de los límites del cambio operado.

Abstract: This article examines the central arguments of México and Its Heritage and locates its writing in both the author's personal history and the binational context in which it was produced. In light of this, Cárdenas holds that Gruening's interpretation is of a progressive liberal or "statist" nature as long it emphasizes the difficulties of the (re)consrruction of a bureaucratic machine founded on new values and procedures. In any case, it seems clear that the pessimism and criticisms of the revolutionary process in México and Its Heritage are not derived from animosity but rather from disenchantment and the perception of the limits of the changes effected.
